Mr. Weagraff's Social Studies Classroom

Course Description

American History I: The Founding Principles will begin with the European exploration of the new world through Reconstruction. Students will examine the historical and intellectual origins of the United States from European exploration and colonial settlement to the Revolutionary and Constitutional eras. AH1 will also guide students as they study the establishment of political parties, America’s westward expansion, the growth of sectional conflict, how that sectional conflict led to the Civil War, and the consequences of the Civil War, including Reconstruction.

Law & Justice introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of law and justice. This class is designed to enable students to think critically about legal issues, apply theories of justice to analyze laws and legal institutions, and address legal problems from various viewpoints and disciplinary perspectives.  This class will utilize instruction, current event analysis, and mock trials to illustrate the principles and goals of our legal system.

Classroom Rules

Be Prepared:  Every day you need to come to class with your binder, paper, something to write with, and assignments.

Be Respectful:  Being respectful includes respecting others’ property and ideas.  We will cover contreversial historical events and current event topics that allow for discussion and debate.  It is essential for us to voice our opinions respectfully and listen to ideas presented by others.

Make an Effort:  When completing class work, participating in activities, and working with others make an effort to do your best.  Making an effort also means that you are to do your own work.  Only original work will be accepted; cheating is not permitted.  You can also make extra effort by attending tutoring sessions.

Classroom Procedures

Bathroom Passes:  You will be given four passes per quarter.  The four passes will be strictly enforced, so plan accordingly.

Absences:  The only way we can achieve what we need to is for everyone to be in class.  If you miss a day, you are responsible for finding the notes and assignments you missed.  Missing assignments will be in the assignment box in the front of the classroom, and you can borrow notes from a friend.  This is your responsibility.

Daily Procedure:  Class will start with a warm-up question that will be posted on the board at the beginning of class.  In addition to completing the warm-up question you should be silent in order for others to work and to allow me to go over directions for the class period.  After the warm-up question, we will usually go over notes before beginning the daily work assignment.

Turning in Work:  Late work will be accepted with a 10% point deduction for each day the assignment is late.  If a problem comes up that prevents you from turning work in on time, you need to let me know before the due date of the assignment so that I can work with you.

Electronic Devices:  Students are not allowed to use cell phones in class.  Music devices are not allowed during notes, class discussion, quizzes, or tests.  With teacher permission, students may use music devices while working on individual assignments.  Students must put devices away once music has started.
